The aircraft was carrying 216 passengers and 12 crew members in two cabins of service.[95][96] Three pilots were among the crew. Among the 216 passengers were one infant, seven children, 82 women, and 126 men.[13] 58-year-old flight captain Marc Dubois, who joined Air France in 1988, had approximately 11,000 flight hours, with 1,700 hours on an Airbus A330. The two co-pilots, 37-year-old David Robert and 32-year-old Pierre-Cedric Bonin, had over 9,000 flight hours between them. Of the twelve crew members, eleven were French and one was Brazilian.[97][98]

According to an official list made public by Air France, most of the passengers were French, Brazilian, and German citizens.[99][100] In addition to this, there were some passengers on this flight who may have held multiple citizenship.[Note 2] Brazilian federal police were said to be examining security video of the passengers boarding to help establish their identities.[66]

So far 50 bodies have been recovered and the search is still underway. The BBC article also notes that AF will arrange a memorial ceremony for the relatives of the victims.

Air France 447 – where we stand today.

16 06 2009

Its been two weeks, and there are still no clear theories of why AF-447 crashed. Crews are still searching for the Black box which might be the *only* way to find out what went wrong mid air in this flight. The batteries in the black box stop ticking in 30 days and grow weaker by the day in giving out their life line beacons.

From abc news, here is a list of search crews,

A French nuclear sub, the Emeraude, equipped with high-tech sonar equipment, is at the crash site listening for the acoustics coming from the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder.

Scheduled to arrive Friday is a French research vessel called the Pourquoi Pas, the only vessel in the French arsenal that carries underwater robots to retrieve the black boxes if their signals are detected.

A U.S. Navy underwater listening device that can pick up the pinging sound from the black boxes at depths of 20,000 feet is also expected in the water Sunday.

On the side, wikipedia notes a bomb threat

On 27 May, four days prior to this incident, Air France received a telephoned bomb threat regarding an earlier flight from Buenos Aires in Argentina to Paris. Authorities at Ezeiza Airport in Buenos Aires delayed the flight before take-off while conducting a 90-minute search of the threatened aircraft; passengers remained on the plane throughout. The search conducted by authorities yielded no explosive material, so the authorities allowed the flight to depart.[134] Investigators are examining links with Air France Flight 447.[135] On 3 June, the French ecology minister in charge of transport, Jean-Louis Borloo, noted that there was no indication that a bomb caused the loss of Flight 447.[136] No one has claimed responsibility for any attack on the aircraft.[citation needed]

On 13 June 2009, it was reported that the recovered debris showed no signs of explosion or fire[137].”

As of today, 49 bodies have been recovered across a 50 mile radius – while pilots around the world are refusing to fly an airbus 330,320- 200. Also to note that this is the first crash that this family of airbus’ have encountered.

Weather graphics has a very detailed meteorological report and some extrapolated data to predict the exact weather condition during the time of the crash.

They note “The resulting satellite photos clearly show an active mesoscale convective system (MCS) across the flight path. About 90% of the cloud material seen on the closeup images are actually multiple levels of convective debris fields from dying storms and activity that occurred previously during the day, with extensive cirrus fields. The active thunderstorm areas are actually defined not by the bright coloring but by small-scale mottled areas of cold cloud tops”

a MCS is really a collection of several thunderstorm heads.

Missed Air France Flight, Only to Die in Car Crash

11 06 2009

“A woman who dodged death when she and her husband narrowly missed Air France Flight 447 before it plunged into the Atlantic Ocean, killing all 228 aboard, was killed in a car accident just over a week later.

Johanna Ganthaler a retiree from the Bolzano-Bozen province, was on vacation in Brazil with her husband Kurt when the pair miraculously missed the doomed flight to Paris. But their luck ran out on an Austrian road earlier this week when their car swerved into the path of an oncoming truck outside the town of Kufstein, the Times (U.K.) reported

Kurt Ganthaler was badly hurt in the accident.

Ever watched final destination, this is spooky. Im really really sorry for the losses. – Life is never fair.

Flight Air France 447, Air France claims…

10 06 2009

Air france claims

” Malfunctions in the Pitot probes on the A 320 led the manufacturer to issue a recommendation in September 2007 to change the probes. This recommendation also applies to long-haul aircraft using the same probes and on which a very few incidents of a similar nature had occurred.

It should be noted that a recommendation from the manufacturer gives the operator total freedom to apply the corresponding guidelines fully, partially or not at all. Should flight safety be concerned, the manufacturer, together with the authorities, issues a mandatory service bulletin followed by an airworthiness directive (AD).”

Aviation experts say that the flight was in a “coffin zone” where a 30 mph make a difference between flying and falling down. Even if the speed sensors froze up for a minute, given the acceleration of these engines there is disaster waiting to happen. They also claim that flight simulations do not train the pilots for real world situations like these, WTF?
